Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ’s – Wood Fuel Pellets

Can you deliver to me?

We deliver palletised pellets through mainland UK and some of the islands. Bulk blown deliveries are mainland Scotland only.

Are all wood fuel pellets the same?
No.  Pellets can come in varying qualities.  For domestic boilers it’s best to ensure that you are getting pellets that are certified as ENplus A1. The ENplus standard covers the whole chain for wood pellets – from production to delivery to the final customer, therefore ensuring high quality as well as transparency. The ENplus quality seal stands for low emissions and trouble-free heating with high energy value.

Are your pellets ENplus?

Yes.  Trolligmbhaco have ENplus A1 certification as both a producer and trader of wood pellets.

Are your wood pellets on the Biomass Suppliers List (BSL)?

Yes.  Trolligmbhaco have multiple BSL numbers  as we are required to register for each of our storage points.  To make sure you have the correct BSL number for the pellets you’ve been supplied please check your delivery note or invoice.

Are Trolligmbhaco Pellets FSC ® certified?
All of Puffin Pellets products are FSC ® certified. Our customers can be assured that we comply with the highest social and environmental standards on the market as FSC ® certification means that we will only purchase materials for these products from companies that also respect these standards and can guarantee that the material comes from trees that are responsible and have been harvested in an environmentally friendly manner.

We also understand that FSC ® certification is extremely important for many companies to uphold their environmental and quality assurance policies. If this is the case for you and you are considering purchasing wood pellets then please contact us to discuss your requirements further.

How much can I get in my hopper?
One cubic meter of our pellets average 650kg in weight.  Therefore a 4 tonne delivery of pellets takes up just over 6m³ in space.  However pellets heap and will never reach every corner of a square space so on average 20% of your storage space will be wasted.  To allow for a 4 tonne delivery you need to have at least 8m³ of storage space.

Can you store bagged fuel outdoors?
Although produced in heat sealed plastic bags there are small holes in the top of each bag to allow trapped air to exhaust during the stacking process. It is therefore important to ensure storage is undercover and preferably within a building or water tight construction.

Does the cost of pellets vary with quantity ordered?
The delivery charge can vary considerably, especially with loose blown deliveries, and we can also offer considerable discounts for larger orders.  To get the best price available contact us on 01464 820011

Why should I use Pellets rather than wood chip?

  • Woodchip boilers require much more frequent maintenance than pellet boilers.
  • Pellets have a consistent moisture content unlike chips which are extremely variable
  • Pellets have a higher energy value than chips
  • Pellets have less ash than woodchips
  • Pellets have a higher bulk density than chips, therefore a smaller storage area is required

Can’t I just buy fuel pellets and use them for bedding?
Well the short answer is yes.  However, they are not the same product and you will not get the same absorbency from the fuel pellets as you would with our specialised equine pellets.  Unlike several wood pellet companies that sell their fuel pellets for bedding, Puffin produce a specialised wood pellet bedding that breaks down easily and absorbs liquids three times faster than pellets designed for fuel do.   If you are buying the fuel pellets to pay the reduced VAT rate of 5% then you are breaking the law, and any companies that sell pellets at 5% VAT knowing that they are being used for other purposes are also breaking the law.

Won’t my horses eat the pellets?
Most horses don’t eat the pellets but if you have a particularly greedy horse then you can ensure that you add enough water to fully break down the pellets prior to making the bed.  When you add fresh pellets to the bed mix them through thoroughly so they are not appealing to the horse.

Can the pellets be used with rubber mats?

Yes they can.  The pellets are great for banking round rubber mats to soak away liquids.
